Hong Kong businesses must renew their Business Registration Certificate (BRC) annually or every three years via the Inland Revenue Department (IRD), with key updates for 2026 including higher fees starting April 1 due to the resumption of the Protection of Wages on Insolvency Fund (PWIF) levy.
Updated 2026 Fees
Effective April 1, 2026, after the PWIF levy exemption ends on March 31:
These apply to new registrations or renewals starting on or after that date; prior periods remain at lower rates like HK$2,200/year.
Renewal Process
The IRD mails a demand note about one month before expiry (e.g., mid-April for May renewal). Pay by the due date via online (PPS/FPS/eTAX), mail (cheque with old BRC copy), or in-person at the Business Registration Office; the stamped note becomes your new certificate. Notify IRD in writing within one month if no note arrives, and update address changes with Form IRC 3111A.
Penalties
Late renewal adds HK$300 per delayed year, with risks of fines up to HK$5,000, prosecution, or business deregistration. Renew early (at least one month prior) and display the BRC at your premises.
