How to Choose a Hong Kong Company Name?

March 27, 2026

Choosing a Hong Kong company name requires careful planning to meet Companies Registry rules and avoid rejection during registration. The name must be unique, compliant, and reflective of your business while passing availability checks.

Name Format Rules

Hong Kong allows English names, Traditional Chinese names, or both registered separately. English names end with “Limited”; Chinese ones use “有限公司”. Mixing English letters and Chinese characters in one name is prohibited, and Simplified Chinese is not accepted.

Names ignore minor differences like “The” at the start, punctuation, spacing, case, or words such as “company” or “and” when checking similarity.

Availability Check

Search the Companies Registry’s Index of Company Names online to ensure no identical or “too like” existing names. The Registrar may reject or later direct changes if similarity causes confusion.

Conduct a separate Intellectual Property Department trademark search, as company registration does not cover IP rights.

Prohibited Names

Avoid offensive content, anything contrary to public interest, or implying criminal offences. Names suggesting ties to the Hong Kong or Central People’s Government, or regulated activities without authorization, face rejection.

Restricted words like “bank”, “trust”, “chamber of commerce”, “authority”, or “bureau” need prior Registrar approval under Cap. 622A.

Approval Process

Propose 2-3 name options and check availability before incorporation via Form NNC1. If using restricted terms, seek Registrar consent first to prevent delays.

Post-registration changes require a special shareholder resolution and filing, still following the same rules.

Best Practices

Opt for distinctive, memorable names that hint at your business without misleading. Test for domain availability and global trademark conflicts early. Professional services can handle searches and pre-approvals efficiently.
