Shanghai Company Name Pre-Approval Process for Foreign Investors

March 29, 2026

For foreign investors registering a company in Shanghai, the first step is to check whether the proposed company name can be accepted. This is commonly known as company name pre-approval or name reservation.

1. Prepare Several Proposed Names

It is advisable to prepare several alternative company names in advance in case the preferred name is unavailable. A company name in Shanghai usually follows a structure such as:

Shanghai + Trade Name + Industry Description + Company Type

2. Submit the Name for Review

Submit the proposed name to check whether it is available and compliant. The authority will generally examine whether the name is identical or too similar to an existing company name, whether the wording complies with naming rules, and whether the industry description matches the intended business scope.

3. Check Foreign Investment Access Rules

For foreign investors, it is important to confirm that the proposed business is consistent with China’s foreign investment access rules, including the negative list where applicable.

4. Proceed with Company Registration

Once the company name is approved, the investor can move forward with the incorporation process, including preparing registration documents, arranging notarization or legalization for overseas documents where required, and applying for the business license.
